Some Helpful Information About Purchasing Dog Collars

Most people who have dogs are genuinely concerned about doing the very best things for them and taking the best care of them that they possibly can.  I truly believe this.  I also wonder however why so many people that have dogs and clearly love their dogs don’t have their dogs wear dog collars.  It’s not uncommon for me to see several dogs around town without dog collars on them.

There are a lot of reasons why it’s very important to always make your dog wear a dog collar.  Some dogs may not like wearing a collar if you don’t make them wear it all the time.  If you only put the dog collar on your dog occasionally, it’s likely to irritate him and he’ll scratch at it and try to get it off.  If you leave it on all the time, he will get used to it and soon forget that it is there.  One very important reason to have your dog wear a dog collar is that if your dog ever gets lost, should somebody find your dog, they will likely recognize that it belongs to somebody and the chances of you getting it back are much higher.

It’s important that your dog wears a collar.  It’s also important that your dog’s collar has your dog’s name on it.  For just a few dollars you can have your dog’s name and phone number engraved on a metal tag at most any pet store.  My preference however is to purchase a dog collar that has your dog’s name riveted on a metal tag to the actual collar.  These name tags are very unlikely to fall off.

When it when it comes time to go to the pet store and buy your dog a dog collar, it can be a little confusing about exactly what type to purchase.  The pet store will likely have hundreds and hundreds of dog collars to choose from.  Most of choosing a dog collar comes down to personal preference but I will make one suggestion.  Let me suggest that the dog collar you purchase should have a metal buckle.  Dog collars with plastic buckles are very easy to come undone and break.  You could be looking at a big problem if your dog accidentally broke the collar while you’re walking down the street.

Sometimes people make the mistake of leaving  a metal dog training collar on their dog as their full time collar.  This is extremely dangerous.  Each year, dozens of dogs are killed when they get this type of collar snagged on something.  What happens is that the dog  panics because he’s caught on something and struggles to free himself. As he struggles, the collar gets tighter and tighter which may result in the suffocation of the dog.

One last reminder about dog collars when it comes to your dog safety.  Your dog should always wear a collar.  Not just when you are taking him for a walk.  He should be required to wear one all of the time morning and night.
